Most 7 year old girls like to play with dolls and make up. Mary Karr likes to play with the big boys. They would run around, sweat, and get dirty. She was not like any ordinary little girl. It was at this age that she first got sexually abused.

"He threw [the clothes] in the corner in a ball, over where I knew there could be   spiders." (Karr 65)

                          "It made me feel ashamed"(66).

"I looked at my father...[would have] gutted this boy like a fish, and at my mother, who for some reason I imagined bursting into tears and locking herself in the bathroom." (67)

This boy happened to be 15 years old and had no trouble taking advantage of a little 7 year old. Mary was a smart girl, but she knew what consequences could come about if she said something. Considering her journey to Colorado with her family, she should have said something in the beginning. Perhaps it would have prevented it from happening again at the age of 8.

"I [got] sick one day and the grown man who allegedly [came] to care for me [winded] up putting his dick in my eight-year-old mouth" (23).
